Writing Intent

We are committed to supporting our children to develop into articulate and imaginative communicators who are well-equipped with the basic skills they need to become fluent, skilled writers. Our ambitious writing curriculum aims to teach both the transcriptional and compositional aspects of writing. We want our children to become automatic and fluent with spelling and handwriting and be able to write coherently and cohesively for a range of purposes and audiences. We aim for children to develop an understanding of how widely writing is used in everyday life and, therefore, how important, and useful the skills are that they are learning.

Handwriting

From EYFS-Year 6, we use Letter-join’s on-line handwriting resource and lesson planners which covers all the requirements of the National Curriculum. In Pines and Poplars children work with staff daily to develop the physical skills required for writing such as core strength, fine motor skills, correct pencil grip and seating position. Through daily, activities children practise making patterns and shapes that then lead into correct letter formation. We teach children the letter formation in print in Pines and Poplars.  Pre-cursive patterns and shapes, leading to cursive writing are introduced through Letter-join in Redwoods.

Writing

Before children move onto the compositional aspects of writing we ensure children have the foundational knowledge for writing embedded. Redwoods, Maples, Oaks and Cedars begin the year by following the Grammarsaurus Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar (PVPG) units. Poplars begin the Year 1 PVPG unit in the Spring term once children are secure with Set 3 sounds.

We ensure that children develop an understanding of how widely writing is used in everyday life and, therefore, how important, and useful the skills are that they are learning. Children have the opportunity to write for a range of audiences and purposes. Within our writing curriculum, we focus around four purposes – to entertain, to inform, to persuade and to discuss. Our English lessons are based around high-quality texts and video stimuli which the children explore and use to inspire their own writing. Please see our writing journey below.
